(FORT WAYNE) - Former Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries has ended his campaign to return to the office, citing personal health concerns.

Fries announced the decision in a message shared through the Allen County Republican Party, saying he would not move forward with the race despite previously signaling his intent to run again. He said health issues led him to step away from the campaign.

Fries said he plans to continue serving on the Allen County Council and remain involved with Crime Stoppers, roles he believes he can maintain while addressing his health. He also said campaign donors who recently contributed will have their money returned.

Fries served eight years as Allen County sheriff before leaving the position in 2015 due to term limits. He announced in November that he intended to seek the office again.

With Fries exiting the race, current sheriff Troy Hershberger remains in the field. Hershberger formally announced his reelection campaign last week.

The primary election is scheduled for May.
