Trine Women’s Basketball Wins Big Against Adrian, 87-35

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's basketball team recorded a dominating performance against Adrian (Mich.) College, 87-35, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at the MTI Center.

The Thunder scored 35 points off of 21 Adrian turnovers and held their opponents to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters. Trine also held Adrian to just 27.9 percent shooting (12-of-43) for the game, including 16.7 percent (three-of-18) from three-point range.

Trine was led in scoring by senior Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) with 21 points on eight-of-11 shooting (72.7 percent). Senior Cassidy Williams (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) was second with 17 points and freshman Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, Ky./New Albany) followed with 13 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) rounded out the high scorers with 10 points.

In addition, junior Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) recorded a career-high nine out of the team's 21 assists on the night. Eight of her assists came in the first half.

Trine (13-2, 6-0 MIAA) never trailed in the game, despite Adrian (5-10, 1-6 MIAA) tying the game at, 6-6, with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Thunder then went on a 7-0 scoring run that ended in jumper by Dawson and never looked back. Taylor connected on a pair of free-throws late in the period to send Trine into the second quarter with a 16-8 advantage.

The second quarter saw Trine put up 33 points in the frame and outscored Adrian, 33-8. The home team opened the quarter with a 13-2 run to go up by 19 points, 29-10, which ended in a triple by Dawson at the 6:47 mark. About two minutes later, Trine went on another run, this time, a 16-0 spurt, to end the half and lead by 33 points after a bucket by Taylor in the final seconds to take a 49-16 margin into the break.

Coming out of the locker rooms, things didn't get any easier for Adrian as the Bulldogs wouldn't score their first basket until the 1:56 mark of the third quarter. Meanwhile, Trine continued to pull away during the Adrian scoring drought and topped the 40-point margin with 5:40 to go on a jumper by Williams en route to having a 47-point lead, 63-16, before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard. The margin later topped 50 points with 34 seconds left thanks to a three-point play by Taylor. Adrian got the final points of the quarter on a layup, but Trine would have a 48-point edge, 71-23, heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, Trine posted its largest lead of the game of 55 points, 83-28, with a little under four minutes to play when sophomore Jaycee Parrett (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) connected on a three-pointer. The Thunder ended the lopsided affair with a jumper by freshman Hannah Milligan (Clinton Twp., Mich./Lutheran North) as Trine went on to claim the 87-35 victory.

Trine will travel to Notre Dame, Ind. to take on Saint Mary's College in a MIAA matchup on Saturday, Jan. 12. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
