The Prairie Heights School District is moving forward with plans to place a referendum for a property tax levy on the upcoming November ballot.

Officials with the school district have conducted meetings in the towns that are a part of the school district explaining the need for the referendum and what it means for property owners. Financial advisers hired by the school district have projected that without a referendum Prairie Heights would be in the red by roughly $11.8 million dollars by 2026.

The need for a referendum is not just a problem for Prairie Heights Community Schools. Recently, school districts such as Fremont and Churubusco have had to call on voters to pass a tax levy reasons. In situations such as this, a property tax levy in the only funding solution offered by the Indiana General Assembly.

Prairie Heights is proposing a tax rate that will not exceed $0.2143 per $100 of the assessed value of property. The current tax rate in 57-cents per $100 of the assessed value.
