(STURGIS) – Sturgis Molded Products is trying to get state funds to help with hiring and training employees.
The Sturgis City Commission held a public hearing during Wednesday’s meeting to discuss the training grant. Assistant City Manager Andrew Kuk says SMP has applied to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for Community Development Block Grant funding.
Kuk says if SMP gets the grant, which is just over $440,000, it would be used to help hire and train 50 new employees for their expanded facility.
Kuk says as with all CDBG grants, the money can't go directly to Sturgis Molded Products. It must go through a government entity whothen disperses the money to the company.
Because the City is merely a facilitator in this project, a development agreement between the City and SMP is necessary to ensure they will follow the grant guidelines and pay back the MEDC if necessary.
The Commission unanimously approved the resolution for the City and SMP to work together to get this loan and disperse it.
