(STURGIS) – A Sturgis firefighter has been arraigned on multiple charges of criminal sexual conduct.
St. Joseph County District Court officials say 36 year old Joshua Jason Snider was arraigned by the Magistrate Tuesday afternoon and is facing charges of one count each of second degree and third degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct.
Snider has been with the Sturgis Fire Department for a little over four years.
It's alleged the incidents happened while Snider was instructing classes at Sturgis High School and was in a position of authority.
Sturgis Director of Public Safety Geoff Smith says he became aware earlier this month that Snider allegedly violated Departmental General Orders. He was placed on unpaid administrative leave while an internal investigation was conducted.
Smith says nothing like this has ever happened before to the department during his time. Smith says by doing this investigation, and asking an outside agency to help, it will remove any thoughts of improprieties.
Smith says he hopes the Fire Department's reputation is not damaged due to the alleged behavior of one person.
Snider's bond was set at $40,000. A pre-trial conference is set for September 2 and a possible preliminary hearing for September 4.
