(SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP) – An Illinois man has died following a near drowning incident over the weekend.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph Underwood says 24 year old Abdi Adan of Wheaton, Il., passed away Monday afternoon at South Bend Memorial Hospital. His death was attributed to the near drowning Adan suffered on Saturday.
Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 911 call at 1:20 PM Saturday on Dewey Lake for a subject who was yelling for help and then went under the water. Deputies arrived and found neighbors performing CPR on Adan.
Emergency personnel from the Sister Lakes Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance arrived and took over CPR on Adan and were able to establish a pulse. He was flown from the scene to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
During their investigation, deputies discovered that Adan swam out to help his sister, who was having trouble turning a kayak around to come back to shore. Witnesses say Adan was not wearing a life jacket, and starting having problems swimming when he called out for help.
Neighbors say they heard Adan and went to his assistance and were able to pull him to shore where they started CPR.
