(CROMWELL) - One man is dead and two others are hospitalized following a shooting incident involving bounty hunters Monday night in Kosciusko County. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department says it happened on the east side of Lake Wawasee west of Cromwell at around 6:50pm. Killed in the incident was 56-year-old Gary W. Helman of Cromwell. He died of multiple gunshot wounds. According to a preliminary investigation, police have determined that three individuals, purportedly bounty hunters, were trying to serve Helman with an active felony warrant out of Kosciusko County for failure to appear.

The three individuals have been identified as 43-year-old Daniel Foster of LaPorte, 36-year-old Michael C. Thomas of Osceola and Tad Martin who is also from Osceola. Helman’s original warrants had stemmed from felony charges of resisting law enforcement and battery resulting in bodily injury.

Police say multiple rounds were fired during a gun battle. Seriously struck during the exchange of gunfire was Martin, along with Helman’s twin brother, Larry D. Helman.

Those two men were taken separately to Parkview Regional Medical Center and Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in very serious condition. Gary Helman was pronounced dead at the scene. Kosciusko County officials are still investigating the incident.
