(STURGIS) – A change will be coming to the intersection of West West Street and North Centreville Road.

During a recent meeting, the Sturgis City Commission was presented with information following a six week change to the traffic signal at the intersection.

On June 24, the Commission approved a change to the intersection to evaluate if a two way stop on West Street would work effectively. The change was to have a blinking yellow light for north and south traffic on Centreville and a blinking red light for east and west traffic on West Street.

City Engineer Barry Cox says he along with Todd Richter of Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineering went over the traffic information and reports from Sturgis Police who observed the intersection at different times of the day. After evaluating the data, Cox says his recommendation is to go with the stop signs. ...... {LISTEN}.

There would also be an auxiliary sign letting motorists and pedestrians know that cross traffic on North Centreville does not stop.

Cox did share some comments from the Police Officers who were monitoring the intersection. ...... {LISTEN}.

The Commission voted 7-1 to approve the removal of the traffic signal and installing stop signs at the completion of the North Centreville Road Project. Cox and Richter did tell the Commission if they see a change in the traffic patterns after the stop signs are installed, they can remove them and have a traffic signal put back in.
