Tuesday, March 26, 2019

In a Monday Night meeting, the Lakeland School Corporation made one of the hardest decision any school board can as it will be going from five schools to three, closing down two elementary school at the end of this school year.

The board voted 4-2 in favor of closing the schools. With declining enrollment, Lakeland leadership said they are expecting an operating loss of nearly $700,000 this year and even higher losses next year. The three-school proposal would is projected to save $1.28 million by the end of 2020, most of that savings coming from cutting staff.

Opponents of closing schools feared large class sizes, overstuffed buildings, and having to say goodbye to schools they loved and considered important parts of the community.

Superintendent Eva Merkel said the immediate next step is to name the leadership of the three schools for next year.
