Positive COVID Variant Cases Found In Branch County
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, June 18, 2021

COLDWATER – Positive cases of the COVID-19 variants Delta and Kappa have been identified in Branch County.

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says they have identified two cases of the Delta variant and one case of the Kappa variant through testing. The Delta variant has been classified by the CDC as a variant of concern, while the Kappa variant is classified as a variant of interest.

Dr. Lauren Vogel, Medical Director for the CHA says a “Variant of Concern” is a designation given where there is increased evidence of factors such as transmissibility, severity of illness or reduced effectiveness of vaccines or treatments. A “Variant of Interest” can become a “Variant of Concern” as more research is available.

All vaccines available to residents of the United States provide protection against the Delta and Kappa variants. While vaccination may still result in diagnosis of COVID-19 variants, Vogel says the severity of illness and risk of hospitalization is decreased in people who are vaccinated versus those who are unvaccinated.
