Crash Thursday Afternoon In Steuben County Claims Truck Driver

On Thursday afternoon just after 4:30 pm, Deputies from the Steuben County Sheriff's Office and first responders were notified of a personal injury accident at 4044 E US 20 in Steuben County. It was reported that a semi had struck a house at that location and the driver was pinned in the vehicle.

As units arrived they found a 2019 Chevrolet 4500 box truck driven by 51 year old Randy Aldridge from Jay, Florida partly in a house. Aldridge was pinned in the vehicle. While fire units worked to free Aldridge. Aldridge stated that he blacked out while driving for an unknown reason. The 2019 Chevrolet truck was traveling eastbound on US 20 near SR 1 and when it went off the north side of the roadway and struck a house. The house was unoccupied and no one was living in the house. Fire units worked to gain access to Aldridge and the driver's compartment of the vehicle.

Once access was gained Fire units removed Aldridge from the vehicle. He was then transported to Cameron Hospital where he later died of an apparent traumatic chest injury sustained during the crash. Aldridge was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol is not believe to be factor in the accident. The weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash. The accident is still under investigation.

Assisting the Sheriff's Office at the scene were the Angola Police Department, Angola Fire Rescue, Metz Fire Rescue, Steuben County EMS, the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, and the Steuben County Coroner's Office.
