A family farm lost a barn in a Sunday morning fire.

The Bronson Fire Department was called to a barn fire at 471 West Southern Road in Gilead Township Sunday morning just after 10 a.m. First units on the scene found a hoop barn filled with approximately 175 round bales of hay fully engulfed in flames.

The barn was part of the Davis Family Farm Homestead, operated by Clint Davis.

Scott Wilbur with the Bronson Fire Department said the homeowners helped remove the round bales with a skid steer while their neighbor, Chuck Shimp, assisted with an excavator.

Firefighters were on scene for five and a half hours. In addition to the bales, there was a trim rack, a baler, and a Polaris Ranger in the barn. Damage to the contents is estimated at $62,000. The hoop barn, which was a total loss, was valued at $15,000.

One Bronson Firefighter suffered a minor laceration to the hand.

No one was home at the onset of the fire in the barn. A horse, which was in the barn when the fire broke out, was led to safety by a passerby who called 911. The caller also re-positioned a tractor, which was close to the barn, a safe distance from the fire.

Over 100,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters with the Lakeland and Orland fire departments. Lifecare Ambulance and Michigan State Police also responded to the scene.
